Location: Tongariro National Park
Trampers: Chris (Dad) and Ben (10 yrs)
Distance: 9.0k to hut via the Mangahuia Track
Our walk in: 3hrs 45mins (with photo & drink stops)
The track begins as a boardwalk from the Manganhuia campground, but you soon enter the beach forest where you undulate along for the first hour before popping out onto the tussock. Here you get great views up towards Ruapehu, across to Ngarahoe and back towards Hauhungatahi.
After traversing the marshy tussock-lands we dropped down into the valley of the Whakapapaiti stream as the clouds closed in. A branch in the track takes you to the Silica Falls track. Further up the valley, a crossing of the stream is required to make the final 30mins trek to the hut.
From the hut you can continue upwards and meet the Round the Mountain Track if you wish, where there are some rockclimbing opportunities. We descended back down the way we came into a strengthening southerly, and a quick trip by car to the eclair shop un Ohakune!
