Our walk in: via Sunrise Track 2hrs 5mins (with photo & drink stops)
Our walk out: via Waipawa River 1hr 40mins (with photo & drink stops)

From the Sunrise car park you head out across the farmland and into the Ruahine Forest Park. You can take a quick diversion to Triplex Hut or do the 1 hour Swamp Track Loop here.

Sunrise track is zig-zags up onto a knoll and from here a signposted track head off to the left down to the Waipawa River. It's a nice track with dense bush, and you get a few glimpses through the trees up the valley to the Waipawa Saddle.

Once at the bottom, you cross the river and head 200 meters downstream to pick up the track to the hut on the other side. It's just a few minutes up the hill in a small clearing.

The hut is well maintained and has two separate bunk rooms off each end. There are some nice areas to explore up the river valley where the river forks.

We decided to head out by following the river downstream, and you need to cross the river back and forth about a dozen times. It narrows into a nice cool gorge before widening out again at the car-park at the end of the farm road.

You walk across the farmland for the final couple of kilometers, or alternatively you can join up with the Swamp Track and head back to Sunrise Car-park through the Bush.
