From the Kiriwhakapapa car-park, you begin the tramp through some really nice redwood, following the stream along a flat section before commencing the climb up to the Blue Range Ridge. you climb over 600m on the way, passing the turn-off to Cow Creek Hut not far from the top.
Once on the ridge, you pop out into a clearing where there is a rock platform that gives you fantastic views up the valley to the north. From here it's just a 10 minute descent down the ridge to the hut.
The hut it'self has heaps of character. It's full of old hospital signs such as 'antenatal clinic', and has a perfectly positioned picnic table outside from where you can relax and enjoy the view.
We awoke to a rainy day, but kept fairly dry on the descent as you are under the forest canopy just about the whole way. Click on the arrow to watch our video!
